Microsoft AI chief warns of mass job automation
17 Feb
Summary
- White-collar jobs could be fully automated within 18 months.
- AI may achieve human-level performance on most professional tasks.
- Up to 20% job losses predicted in 1-5 years due to AI.

Microsoft's head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, has issued a stark warning regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. He anticipates that AI will soon reach human-level capabilities in most professional tasks, leading to the full automation of white-collar jobs within the next 12 to 18 months.
Suleyman coined the term "artificial capable intelligence" to describe this next phase towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He envisions a future with billions of "digital minds", accessible to nearly every institution and individual. This perspective aligns with a broader trend of tech leaders raising alarms about AI's impact on employment.
Earlier in May 2025, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei similarly cautioned the US government. Amodei predicted that AI could displace up to half of all entry-level jobs, potentially causing unemployment rates as high as 20% within the next one to five years.
