The Apple App Store has experienced a substantial increase in new app releases over the past year and a half, largely driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and a development technique called 'vibecoding.' This AI-powered approach allows individuals with no prior programming knowledge to create functional websites and mobile applications simply by describing their ideas to an AI tool. Marco Pérez, a software engineer, successfully developed two apps using these tools, InfoDrizzle and Stampa, experiencing modest financial success and contributing to the overall app market growth.

Last year, the App Store saw a 30 percent increase in new app releases, with estimates reaching around 600,000. The first half of this year saw this number nearly double. While this influx could potentially boost Apple's revenue through its commission on in-app purchases, overall app downloads have grown much more slowly, increasing by only 3 percent last year. This disparity raises questions about whether the surge is breathing new life into the store or merely contributing to its clutter.

Despite the growth in app creation, Apple is reportedly facing challenges with increased app review times. Developers have noted longer waits for their submissions to be processed. Apple maintains that it upholds high standards for all apps and that most submissions are reviewed within 48 hours. The long-term impact of vibecoding on the App Store's quality, user experience, and Apple's business model remains to be seen, as the market adjusts to this new wave of AI-enabled development.
