AI Researcher Quits, Warns of Existential Risk
9 Sep
Summary
- An ex-Anthropic researcher fears AI competition poses extreme danger.
- He believes companies are racing towards uncontrollable AI.
- Fear of AI's potential to cause human extinction is widespread privately.
Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at AI firm Anthropic, has publicly voiced grave concerns about the unchecked competition in artificial intelligence development. He resigned from his position, citing the extreme danger posed by the race to create advanced AI.
Coxon expressed his belief that companies are engaged in a global competition that could result in humans losing control of AI systems. He suggested that drastic measures, such as a temporary halt on further development of AI capabilities, might be necessary.
Despite Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's public statements on AI's unpredictability, Coxon asserts that the private fears among AI executives and senior researchers are even more intense. He noted that many in the field genuinely believe AI could lead to human extinction within the current decade.
