US data centers consume 17 to 19 billion gallons of water annually for chip cooling, a demand projected to triple within five years. This substantial water usage presents challenges for scaling AI infrastructure. Omen AI, founded in 2024, is developing real-time sensors to monitor the health of cooling fluids, addressing issues like valve failure and bacterial growth.
The company recently acquired competitor Aquatic Labs for $16 million in a cash-and-stock deal. This strategic acquisition merges Omen's elemental sensors with Aquatic Labs' alkalinity testing technology. The combined capabilities offer a more comprehensive understanding of water quality and automate a previously slow, manual testing process.
Omen's initial sensors will monitor chips consuming 250 to 300 MW of power by the end of 2026. The company aims to expand to 1 GW of chips by the end of 2027. This technology enhances data center uptime by allowing operators to maintain fluid systems for longer periods, thus minimizing costly shutdowns and fluid replacement.
Beyond data centers, Omen's technology could also improve the safety and responsibility of water discharge into municipal systems. Despite recent investor skepticism about AI infrastructure spending, Omen's focus on solutions for already-built data centers insulates them from shifting market sentiments.
