Modern sports clubs, operating much like large businesses, are now prime targets for cybercriminals. The evolving threat landscape reveals that Artificial Intelligence (AI) significantly amplifies cyber risks within this industry.
Cybercriminals are leveraging AI to craft more convincing phishing schemes, generate deepfakes, impersonate brands, and mimic professional athletes. Simultaneously, sports organizations themselves are adopting AI without adequate security measures, inadvertently creating new vulnerabilities.
This heightened risk is particularly pronounced in professional sports due to the convergence of live events, valuable data, public scrutiny, fixed schedules, and extensive partner networks. These factors collectively offer attackers maximum publicity, profit, and potential impact.
Data from 875 security decision-makers shows that 84% of professional sports organizations suffered at least one cyber incident in the past 12 months, with 57% experiencing multiple attacks. Furthermore, 83% identified AI in these attacks, and 72% anticipate AI will escalate cyber risks in the coming year.
The financial repercussions are substantial, with individual incidents costing approximately $170,000. For clubs hit repeatedly, annual losses can escalate to $1.7 million.
