AI Referee for Marriage: Cheaper Therapy?
7 Mar
Summary
- AI couples referee platform launches at $12 per week.
- It uses AI to recreate evidence-based therapy assessments.
- Experts warn AI cannot replace human therapists.

A new "AI couples referee" platform called CoupleRef launched in February 2026, offering a weekly subscription service for $12. Founder Daniel Fountenberry was inspired by the high cost of traditional couples therapy, which can range from $100 to $300 per hour in the U.S.
CoupleRef aims to replicate the structure of evidence-based practices and assessments using AI, providing users with insights comparable to a PhD-level clinical psychologist. Fountenberry believes this approach makes valuable relationship knowledge publicly accessible, serving as an alternative for those frustrated with conventional therapy.
While AI can offer accessible and affordable solutions, mental health experts express caution. They warn that AI chatbots cannot fully replace human therapists and may inadvertently reinforce negative behaviors without adequate safeguards. Dr. Jenna Glover noted that AI might incessantly validate users without offering constructive disagreement, unlike a human therapist.
Other online interventions for couples exist, such as Arya, which integrates AI with human concierges for relationship and sex life guidance. Arya uses AI for automated responses and initial assessments, with human specialists reviewing more complex issues. However, CoupleRef, unlike Arya, does not conduct manual reviews of conversations to protect user privacy. Fountenberry acknowledges that CoupleRef is not intended for individuals experiencing intimate partner violence.
