AI Content Unmasking: New Rules Embed Digital DNA
10 Feb
Summary
- New rules mandate permanent, unerasable metadata for AI content.
- Metadata acts as digital DNA, tracing content to its origin.
- Platforms face liability if they allow metadata removal.

New Information Technology Amendment Rules, 2026, in India mandate that AI-generated content must now carry permanent, embedded metadata. This 'digital DNA' will make every synthetic image, audio, or video traceable to its origin, including the specific computer resource used for its creation. The aim is to combat misinformation and deepfakes by ensuring technical provenance and a clear history of who made the content and when.
Crucially, platforms are prohibited from offering tools that allow users to remove or tamper with this metadata. Failure to comply strips intermediaries of their safe harbor protection, making them legally liable for the content. Visible labels for AI content will also adhere to new standards, covering at least 10% of display or duration. This initiative is designed to prevent anonymity for those spreading AI-driven falsehoods, potentially aiding legal proceedings under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
