10 Jun
Summary
- Nvidia exec notes compute costs exceed employee salaries.
- Mercor startup spends more on AI tokens than staff.
- Top AI-using firms spend $7,500 monthly per employee.

Compute costs are beginning to rival and even exceed employee salaries for some companies. An Nvidia executive recently stated that the expense of AI computation has surpassed the cost of his workforce. Similarly, Mercor's CEO indicated their startup is allocating more funds to internal AI agent tokens than to employee compensation.
Fresh research from the Ramp AI Index shows that the top 1% of American businesses, described as heavily invested in AI, are spending approximately $7,500 per employee per month on AI. This figure, while substantial, has not yet overtaken the average salary of a software engineer, which is around $16,000 monthly. The top 10% of AI-utilizing firms spend about $611 per employee each month, with the median expenditure being a mere $11.38.
Despite these costs, AI spending continues its upward trajectory. For the leading AI adopters, expenditure per employee increased by 14.1% last month, though the sustainability of this trend remains uncertain. These leading firms often employ a diversified strategy, utilizing a combination of frontier models and open-source platforms to manage costs.
