A group of plaintiffs has initiated a lawsuit against leading artificial intelligence firms Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and SpaceXAI. The legal action, filed in the Northern District of California, alleges a conspiracy among these companies to intentionally decelerate the advancement of artificial intelligence.
The lawsuit contends that shortly after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an article on September 12, advocating for a slowdown in the development of advanced AI models, his counterparts Elon Musk of SpaceXAI, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind agreed with this position.
This alleged agreement is claimed to restrain competition in key areas such as model development, product quality, innovation, investment, and the release of new features. The plaintiffs assert that the collective decision replaces independent innovation strategies with a unified approach to limit progress.
Amodei has reportedly expressed that a coordinated slowdown could provide AI companies with additional time to refine models before they reach critical developmental stages, thereby avoiding significant errors. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also previously acknowledged the possibility of creating AI systems that could operate beyond human control.
