AI Outperforms Doctors in Emergency Triage
30 Apr
Summary
- AI diagnosed patients more accurately than human doctors.
- AI excelled in rapid decisions with limited information.
- AI provided superior long-term treatment plans.

Artificial intelligence systems have outperformed human doctors in critical emergency medicine triage, according to a significant Harvard study. The research, published in the journal Science, indicated that large language models (LLMs) have achieved unprecedented levels of clinical reasoning.
In one experiment involving 76 emergency room patients, an AI achieved a diagnosis accuracy of 67%, surpassing the 50%-55% accuracy of human doctors. This advantage was most pronounced in urgent situations requiring swift decisions with limited information. The AI's accuracy improved to 82% with more data, compared to expert humans at 70-79%.
Furthermore, the AI generated significantly better long-term treatment plans, scoring 89% compared to 34% for human doctors using conventional resources. Researchers emphasize that this does not signify an immediate replacement of physicians but rather a profound technological transformation in medicine.
Experts foresee a future 'triadic care model' integrating AI alongside doctors and patients. However, concerns remain regarding AI error, liability, and the absence of a formal accountability framework. The study did not assess AI's ability to interpret patient distress signals or visual cues, highlighting its current role more as a sophisticated second opinion.
