Summary
- AI tool guided surgeons during the world's first live-assisted brain surgery.
- Patient Rhys Hibbert's sight was at risk from a pituitary gland tumor.
- The AI analyzed real-time video to navigate around critical brain structures.

The world's first patient to undergo live AI-assisted brain surgery has had his tumor successfully removed. Rhys Hibbert, a father-of-two, faced potential sight loss without the innovative procedure at University College London Hospital.
The artificial intelligence tool processed a live video feed during the operation, providing crucial guidance to surgeons. It helped them identify and avoid delicate, hidden nerves and vessels within the brain, enabling the safe removal of as much of the tumor as possible.
Hibbert's tumor, measuring 11mm, was located on his pituitary gland, perilously close to his carotid arteries and optic nerves. The growth had begun to impact his peripheral vision by pressing on these vital structures.
