AI Ambition Outpaces Enterprise Readiness
9 Mar
Summary
- 85% of enterprises aim for agentic AI, but lack operational support.
- Optimized processes are crucial for AI ROI, executives believe.
- Process modernization is now a prerequisite for competing with AI.

Enterprises are aggressively pursuing AI-driven transformation, with 85% aiming for agentic capabilities within three years. However, 76% of these organizations admit their current operations cannot support such a shift. The primary challenge lies in the lack of modernized workflows and operational resilience, despite AI being seen as a significant competitive opportunity by 89% of leaders. This gap between ambition and infrastructure is a major roadblock.
AI agents require optimized, AI-ready processes and contextual understanding to function effectively, yet most enterprises struggle with siloed teams and unintegrated systems. The Celonis 2026 Process Optimization Report highlights that 82% of decision-makers believe AI will fail to deliver ROI without understanding business operations. Consequently, process optimization has become a critical prerequisite for AI strategy, moving beyond a mere IT project.
Addressing the AI adoption challenge also involves change management and evolving operating models, not just technological fixes. Siloed teams (54%) and poor inter-departmental coordination (44%) are significant blockers, with 93% of leaders emphasizing that process optimization involves people and culture as much as tools. Modernizing data, systems, and processes is essential to enable AI at scale and ensure it can deliver tangible business outcomes and agility in a dynamic global environment.
