AI Security Lag: Autonomy Outpaces Controls
17 Jul
Summary
- Over half of organizations faced AI agent security incidents.
- Only a third of firms provide unique identities for AI agents.
- Most AI security tools are borrowed from providers, not purpose-built.

Enterprises are granting AI agents extensive access to systems and data, but the security controls designed to manage them are lagging significantly. Over half of organizations surveyed have already encountered confirmed AI agent security incidents or close calls. A critical weakness identified is in identity management, with only about a third of businesses providing each AI agent with its own scoped identity.
Most organizations continue to use shared credentials for their agents, and only 30% isolate their highest-risk agents. The security stack is heavily reliant on tools provided by model providers and hyperscalers, rather than dedicated agent security solutions. This approach, while satisfactory for now, is seen as a temporary measure, with a majority planning to update their tooling within the year.
Spending on AI agent security remains a small fraction of overall security budgets. Confidence in defenses is divided, with only about a third believing their security is ahead of AI-enabled attackers. This situation highlights a growing disparity between the rapid advancement of AI agent autonomy and the slower development of robust, purpose-built security measures.
