AI Agents: Flexibility Trumps Model Choice
5 Oct
Summary
- Flexibility drives AI agent platform choice, not the model.
- Enterprises expect control planes to be external by 2026.
- Many companies lack real-time AI agent spending controls.
In August, a survey revealed that enterprises select AI agent orchestration platforms primarily based on flexibility across models and tools, production reliability, and ease of development, rather than the AI model itself. Only 2% of platform users cited the model's alignment as their main selection criterion.
By the end of 2026, 67% of respondents expect agent control planes to be at least partially external to provider-managed services, signaling a move towards greater enterprise control. However, challenges remain, with 23% of organizations using agent orchestration tracking spending only after the fact, lacking real-time controls to prevent budget overruns.
Many enterprises are adopting multiple platforms, increasing the likelihood of future platform changes. True multi-agent workflows are still a small segment of deployed agents, with 53% reporting a quarter or fewer agents in such configurations. Investments in agent workflow tooling and security are projected to grow significantly in the coming year.
