Adobe Backtracks: Animate Not Discontinued After User Uproar

Adobe has announced a significant reversal regarding its 2D animation software, Adobe Animate. Initially slated for discontinuation on March 1, 2026, the company has now confirmed that Animate will remain available to all users. This change of tune occurred on February 4, 2026, following strong customer opposition.

The software will enter maintenance mode, meaning it will continue to receive essential security and bug fixes. However, Adobe will no longer develop new features for Animate. This ensures that both current and future customers can still access and use the software, preserving their content.

Adobe had previously cited a shift in focus towards AI technologies as the reason for discontinuing Animate, a product that has been in existence for over 25 years. The company struggled to recommend direct replacements, suggesting other Adobe applications like After Effects and Express for partial functionality.

Some users had urged Adobe to at least open-source the software rather than abandon it. The company's initial plan for discontinuation had caused considerable distress among its user base, many of whom rely on Animate for their work and subscriptions.

This reversal means that Adobe Animate will continue to be offered to new customers, contrary to the earlier plan where only existing users would retain access, with enterprise clients receiving extended support until March 1, 2029. The pricing for the software, typically around $34.49 per month, was also subject to change under the discontinuation plan.
