New Weather App Bets on Inaccuracy
23 Feb
Summary
- New app Acme Weather offers multiple predictions due to forecast uncertainty.
- It provides down-to-the-minute rain and severe weather warnings.
- The app uses satellite, ground, and radar data for enhanced forecasts.

Acme Weather, a new weather application from the original creators of Dark Sky, has launched for iOS. This app acknowledges the inherent inaccuracies in weather forecasting by presenting users with not only a primary prediction but also several alternate forecasts. These alternate predictions are visualized as lines, indicating the reliability of the main forecast through their proximity.
The app draws on a variety of data sources, including satellite data, ground station observations, and radar data, to offer what its creators claim are better forecasts and more information than Dark Sky provided. Users can report current conditions, which appear as icons on a shared map, enhancing the data available during active weather events.
Acme Weather also revives and enhances Dark Sky's well-loved notification features. Users can customize alerts for down-to-the-minute rain, severe weather warnings issued by governments, nearby lightning, and even potential rainbow sightings. While currently iOS-exclusive, an Android version is planned, though no release date has been set. A free two-week trial is available, followed by a $25 annual subscription.
