According to acclaimed director Paul Schrader, the future of Hollywood is set to be increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming years. In a recent interview, Schrader revealed that he expects movies to be "more and more AI" and even claimed that he is "only two years away from the first AI feature."
Schrader, an Oscar nominee, explained that he sees AI as a powerful tool for filmmaking, capable of creating facial expressions and emotions that can surpass human actors. He said he has read a "perfect script to do all AI" and is open to the idea of AI-penned film reviews, despite his own early career as a movie critic.
Defending his stance, Schrader argued that AI is "just a tool" that can be used to "sculpt" the same way an author sculpts a character's reaction in a novel or story. He believes AI can provide better film coverage than the "average coverage" and, unlike human critics, AI does not have to "favor anybody."
However, Schrader did acknowledge that AI can also be taught to be biased, suggesting that the technology is not entirely free from human influence. Nonetheless, the director remains optimistic about the potential of AI in the film industry, stating that he was "STUNNED" by the scripts ChatGPT generated when he asked for "an idea for a Paul Schrader film."
