18 Mar
Summary
- New BMW i3 electric sedan arrives in August 2027.
- Features an 800V battery pack with 440 miles of range.
- Offers 463 hp and uses sustainable, recycled materials.

Production of the 2027 BMW i3, the brand's first electric 3 Series sedan, is scheduled to commence in Munich this August. This new model is built on BMW's innovative Neue Klasse platform, largely retaining the design of its concept predecessor. Key exterior features include a modern interpretation of BMW's kidney grille using light instead of chrome and a slightly raised rear deck for improved cargo capacity.
The interior mirrors the iX3's design, featuring a touchscreen infotainment system and a new multifunction steering wheel, alongside BMW's Panoramic Vision display and an AI personal assistant. The i3 will utilize BMW's sixth-generation powertrain, highlighted by an 800V battery pack with new cylindrical cells offering 20 percent greater energy density. This setup allows for DC fast charging at up to 400 kW and is expected to deliver up to 440 miles of range.
Initially available as the i3 50 xDrive, it will produce 463 hp. BMW emphasizes the powertrain's efficiency, lower energy losses, and reduced manufacturing costs. The vehicle also incorporates about 30 percent recycled materials and mono-materials for easier end-of-life recycling, aiming for carbon output parity with gasoline models within a year of production.
BMW has prioritized driving dynamics for the i3, with a near 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity. It features revised suspension components for enhanced ride comfort and stability. Advanced software-defined driving dynamics control systems, including traction and stability control, have been rewritten from scratch. This focus on software is intended to make the i3 more engaging to drive, potentially even easier to drift than its predecessors.
