11 Jul
Summary
- ShinyHunters targeted Rockstar Games and Instructure's Canvas platform.
- Meta's AI for Instagram was exploited to steal accounts.
- DarkSword spyware targeted iPhones, and WeedHack malware targets gamers.

The initial six months of 2026 have been marked by a series of alarming cybersecurity incidents. The hacker collective ShinyHunters has become a prominent threat, breaching Rockstar Games and Instructure, the provider of the widely used Canvas learning management system. The Instructure breach alone impacted 275 million users across approximately 9,000 schools globally.
Further complicating the digital landscape, Meta's AI-powered support for Instagram was found to have a critical vulnerability, allowing hackers to easily reset passwords and steal accounts. Separately, the DarkSword spyware emerged, exploiting vulnerabilities in Apple's iPhones to exfiltrate sensitive data from devices after users visited malicious websites.
Adding to the growing list of threats is WeedHack, a malware-as-a-service tool priced as low as $5 per month. Initially disguised as a Minecraft mod, it allows users to steal data and gain control over infected devices. McAfee Labs reported that this tool is being significantly used for cyberbullying among teenagers and young adults, highlighting a concerning trend in accessible malicious software.
