17 Apr
Summary
- Motor delivers 1,000 horsepower from a 94 kg package.
- Power density reaches 8 kW per kg, surpassing typical EV motors.
- The motor is part of Project AMBER for hybrid electric propulsion.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology has developed a groundbreaking electric motor capable of producing 1,000 horsepower from a compact, 94 kg unit. This motor achieves an exceptional power density of 8 kW per kilogram, significantly exceeding the capabilities of most current electric vehicle and even aviation motors.
Utilizing advanced hairpin windings and direct oil spray cooling, the motor efficiently manages heat, allowing for sustained high output. Its innovative use of ultra-thin NO15 steel (0.15 millimeters) minimizes eddy currents, enhancing efficiency, particularly at high speeds up to 21,000 rpm.
This motor is a key component of Project AMBER, a European Union initiative focused on developing hydrogen fuel cell hybrid electric propulsion for regional aircraft. The project aims to substantially reduce aviation's carbon footprint. The motor's design incorporates four independent sections, each with its own control system, ensuring operational redundancy crucial for flight safety.
While this prototype represents a significant engineering achievement, the transition to certified aviation hardware will require further development. The project faces ambitious timelines and ongoing questions about the viability of hydrogen fuel cells for regional flight routes. Nevertheless, the motor's performance marks a notable step forward for electric aviation.
