Hera Social, a new café-bar in York, is making waves as what is believed to be the first venue in Yorkshire exclusively dedicated to women's sports. Opened by Hattie Dillon, 22, and Erin Draper, 23, the establishment addresses a notable inconsistency in sports coverage, where women's matches often take a backseat to men's fixtures.
Dillon highlighted the common issue of women's club games being overlooked, even during major tournaments. Hera Social aims to rectify this by regularly featuring Women's Super League matches, WTA Tour tennis, and other women's sporting events, while also accommodating popular men's leagues and racing series like Formula One academy.
Despite it being their first hospitality venture, the founders drew inspiration from their desire to foster a more accessible and welcoming environment for all sports enthusiasts. They emphasized that Hera Social is inclusive, offering a comfortable and friendly space for individuals wishing to watch sports without the typical rowdiness.
The bar, located on Gillygate, opened its doors last Saturday to a busy reception. The founders, who also sponsor local team Honeyball United WFC, plan to build further community links. Future plans include utilizing their garden space for major events like next year's FIFA Women's World Cup, aiming to enhance accessibility for young girls aspiring to see female athletes as role models.
