Yash Punja, a 19-year-old leg-spinner for the Rajasthan Royals, has quickly impressed in his debut IPL season. Playing only his second professional match, Punja claimed the key wickets of Cooper Connolly and Prabhsimran Singh against Punjab Kings on Tuesday in New Mullanpur. This followed his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders, where he took the wicket of Ramandeep Singh.
Despite being targeted for 15 runs in his first over against Punjab Kings, Punja demonstrated resilience. He broke a 59-run partnership by dismissing Australian left-hander Cooper Connolly with a googly. He later removed Prabhsimran Singh, providing crucial breakthroughs for his team.
Punjab Kings captain Riyan Parag showed faith in the young bowler, bringing him into the attack during a critical phase. Punja's journey to the IPL includes being a net bowler for the Rajasthan Royals for two years after impressing scouts. He was bought at the IPL 2026 auction for ₹30 lakhs.
Breaking into the Karnataka team was challenging due to domicile rules. However, with the KSCA reducing the playing period requirement, Punja was selected for the Karnataka U-23 camp and played for Hubli Tigers in the Maharaja KSCA T20 Trophy in 2025. He emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker in his debut season with 23 wickets.
