Volpe Returns: Yankees Recall Shortstop After Injury.
13 May
Summary
- Anthony Volpe was recalled by the Yankees after one week in the minor leagues.
- José Caballero was placed on the injured list with a broken right middle finger.
- Volpe is expected to resume his starting shortstop role for the Yankees.

Anthony Volpe has rejoined the New York Yankees, a week after his demotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The shortstop's recall on Tuesday was prompted by an injury to José Caballero, who suffered a broken right middle finger and was placed on the 10-day injured list. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Volpe is expected to resume his starting duties at shortstop.
Volpe, a Gold Glove winner in 2023, had previously undergone shoulder surgery. He was optioned to the minor leagues on May 3 after a rehabilitation assignment. Caballero, acquired last July, has been a regular at shortstop, hitting .249 with four home runs and 13 RBIs this season. Boone expressed optimism that Caballero's injury would be short-term, but the decision was made to protect him from further injury.
Caballero sustained his injury while diving back to first base during a game on Sunday. Despite the setback, Boone opted not to risk further aggravation for the shortstop. Volpe's recent minor league performance included hitting .221 with one homer and eight RBIs in 18 games. His major league service time will not be impacted by the brief optional assignment.
