Teen Phenom Espart Sparks Barca Comeback

Eighteen-year-old Xavi Espart made a surprising senior debut for Barcelona in the 86th minute of a Champions League match against Newcastle. He replaced Ronald Araujo and played approximately nine minutes, including stoppage time, during which he made two key defensive plays. This timely intervention came before Lamine Yamal scored a 96th-minute equalizer.

Four days after his unexpected debut, Espart was given his first start for Barcelona in a La Liga match against Sevilla. He played the full 90 minutes in their 5-2 victory, showcasing his development. Espart is part of a talented generation of young players at La Masia, born in 2007, including Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi.

Espart joined Barcelona's youth academy at age eight and was scouted by the same individual who recommended Lamine Yamal. He was instrumental in the under-19 team's treble-winning season last year. He was promoted to Barca Atletic, the club's reserve team, for the 2025-26 season, but also continues with the under-19s.

Initially a holding midfielder, Espart's tactical intelligence led to a transition to right-back three years ago after injuries created an emergency need. Coach Hansi Flick compared him to Philipp Lahm, noting his confidence on the ball and versatility. Espart had been training with the first team since October but suffered a knee injury in November while on international duty.
