The 35th annual World Pilot Gig Championships are underway on the Isles of Scilly, drawing thousands of rowers. Over 480 crews, comprising six rowers and a cox, are competing in the spectacular event spanning Friday to Sunday.
Competitors from Cornwall, across the UK, the Netherlands, and the United States have undergone months of intense training. Many clubs, like the Falmouth Pilot Gig Club, have a strong heritage and high hopes for success. Falmouth's Mens A crew, aiming to improve on their second-place finishes from the last two years, are particularly focused on winning this time.
The championships cater to various age groups, featuring categories such as Vets (over 40) and Super Vets (over 50). Some crews, like Truro River Rowing Club's Ladies A, have been training consistently, even through winter, managing fatigue with multiple water sessions and gym work. Helen Pearce of Truro's Super Vets A crew described the training as demanding, emphasizing the necessity of time on the water regardless of conditions.
Beyond the competitive elite, many first-time participants are experiencing the championships. Marie Brown of Portreath Pilot Gig Club, who started rowing last year, looks forward to applying her training and being part of a larger event. This marks her first time on the islands for the competition, embracing the opportunity to learn a new skill and improve her fitness.
