WNBA Expansion Fuels Player Growth & Global Reach

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has seen a substantial increase in player opportunities due to league expansion over the past two seasons. The addition of three expansion teams has created approximately 36 new player spots, in addition to developmental contracts and a league-wide mandate for 12-player rosters. This influx is directly benefiting players by allowing overlooked talent to emerge as stars. Veronica Burton, for instance, transformed her career with the Golden State Valkyries, earning Most Improved Player honors and a substantial contract. Similarly, Marina Mabrey is flourishing with the Toronto Tempo, averaging a career-high in points.

Furthermore, these expansion teams are providing younger players with the chance to earn more significant roles within the league. Players who were previously underutilized by their original teams are now finding expanded playing time and increased scoring opportunities. Sarah Ashlee Barker, after a limited rookie season, has seen her minutes and scoring average triple with the Portland Fire. Her teammate, Carla Leite, is also having a career year with the Fire, showcasing the developmental impact of expanded rosters.

The growth of the WNBA through expansion is also fostering the globalization of women's basketball. Teams are actively recruiting international talent, with the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo notably having a majority of players born outside the United States. This international presence is seen as a positive step toward making the WNBA more accessible globally, ultimately aiming to raise the overall level of play and highlight the diverse talent within the sport.
