The Winona Cotter Ramblers are advancing to the section championship game after a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Lake City. The decisive blow came in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore catcher KJ Kreidermacher launched a three-run home run, breaking a tie and giving the Ramblers a lead they would not relinquish.
This win marks a significant milestone for the program, as coach Mathias O'Brien, who returned to Cotter last season, guided the team to the section finals. This achievement mirrors successful runs in 2006 and 2008, a period O'Brien also experienced as a coach.
Senior pitcher Dane Guzzo secured the save, coming in to conserve pitcher Vince Frisch's workload for the championship game. Despite Lake City mounting a late rally in the seventh inning, Guzzo held on, striking out the final batter to secure the win.
Winona Cotter, now 23-3, will face Lourdes in the section championship on Tuesday, June 2. Lake City concludes its season with a 15-10 record after losing to Lourdes in an elimination game.
