5 Sep
Summary
- North Winnipeg Nomads' home field deemed unsafe for play.
- Youth teams temporarily relocated to Frank Whyte Park.
- Club seeks $600,000 for field repairs or artificial turf.

The North Winnipeg Nomads football teams are currently without a home field due to safety concerns. The field, located off McPhillips Street, has been deemed unsafe for children because of its uneven surface, posing a risk of injuries like slips and twists. As a result, the club's five youth and young adult teams, along with high school games, have been temporarily relocated to Frank Whyte Park.
The Nomads are appealing for community, business, and government assistance to raise an estimated $600,000 for necessary field repairs. While club president Rodney Sankar hopes for upgrades by 2027, the immediate focus is on ensuring a safe playing environment. Discussions are underway regarding the possibility of installing artificial turf, an option supported by Winnipeg High School Football League commissioner Jeffrey Bannon and Mynarski councillor Ross Eadie, as a more durable long-term solution.
Jasmine Gauthier, mother of 11-year-old player Daxton, expressed her desire for the team to play at home again soon. She believes fixing the grass field should be the priority, with artificial turf as a future goal. The club aims for field longevity and is actively exploring all avenues to restore a safe and functional playing space for its athletes.
