Willie Fritz Climbs Coach Rankings After Big 12 Success

The Houston Cougars football program has seen a remarkable resurgence, largely credited to head coach Willie Fritz. Following a 4-8 record in 2024, the team achieved a 10-win season in 2025, culminating in a Texas Bowl victory and a consistent top 25 ranking. This impressive turnaround has not gone unnoticed, with Fritz earning significant recognition.

Fritz was recently ranked No. 18 in CBS Sports' top 25 power rankings for college football coaches, a substantial jump from his previous No. 41 placement. This elevated standing reflects the team's recent success and improved recruiting efforts, which now attract top-tier talent, including the nation's No. 1 recruit. Houston is now considered a potential contender for the Big 12 championship.
