Whittlesey Leisure Centre: £23M Project Delayed by 2 Years
19 Oct
Summary
- Leisure centre redevelopment now expected to finish in October 2028.
- Project delayed by two years due to contractor administration.
- New centre includes padel courts, skate park, and cafe.
The much-anticipated redevelopment of the Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey, near Peterborough, has been significantly delayed, with completion now estimated for October 2028. This two-year setback is attributed to the main contractor entering administration in May 2024. Fenland District Council has been evaluating options for the aging 1960s facility since May 2024.
The proposed £23m project, which includes £2.5m from Sport England, aims to replace the existing buildings that have reached the end of their useful lives. Maintenance of the current structures alone would cost £5.2m. The new centre promises modern amenities such as padel and badminton courts, a skate park, a soft play area, and a cafe.
Alternative plans considered by the council included maintaining the existing buildings with a new pool tank for £7.35m, or repairing the current tank for £5.2m, though the latter cannot achieve a warranted condition. Councillors were set to discuss these options in December and make a decision soon after.
If the new build proceeds, the construction of the leisure centre itself is slated for completion by October 2028. However, the accompanying car park replacement project is projected to continue into 2029.
