Fourth-seeded West Muskingum secured the Division V East District championship with a thrilling 30-28 victory over top-seeded Belmont Union Local. Teriauna Brandford emerged as the hero, hitting a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer with just one second left on the clock to give West its only lead of the second half.
Lyla Johnson was instrumental in West's comeback, scoring 12 of the team's 14 second-half points through tough drives. Belmont Union Local had taken a brief 28-27 lead with less than a minute remaining after All-Ohioan Laken Vinskovich split two free throws.
West, now 19-5, advances to a regional semifinal game on March 4 at Claymont High School against No. 3 seed Zoarville Tuscarawas Valley. Belmont Union Local, despite a valiant effort and an inspiring performance from Vinskovich, concluded their season on a heartbreaking note.
