Woodward Ascends: First Woman in FBS Football Play-by-Play Role

Elise Woodward has been appointed as the new play-by-play announcer for Washington football, a significant move for the university and college sports broadcasting. She succeeds Tony Castricone, who departed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason. Woodward is no stranger to the role, having previously served as the play-by-play announcer for two games in 2021 when Castricone was on leave.

This promotion marks a historic milestone, as Woodward is believed to be the first woman to secure a full-time play-by-play position for an FBS football team. Her deep connection to Washington spans decades; she was a student-athlete from 1993 to 1997, later serving 23 seasons as the Huskies' sideline reporter. She also maintains national broadcasting duties with ESPN for the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
