Hall of Famer Warren Sapp Out at Colorado After Two Seasons
27 Feb
Summary
- Warren Sapp will not return to coach at Colorado in 2026.
- Sapp's coaching tenure saw fluctuating sack production for the Buffaloes.
- Several defensive coaches have left Colorado this offseason.

Warren Sapp will not continue as part of Deion Sanders' coaching staff at the University of Colorado for the 2026 season. The departure of the Pro Football Hall of Famer was announced recently, marking a significant change for the Buffaloes' football program. Sapp joined Sanders' staff in 2023, initially as a graduate assistant before being promoted to defensive pass rush coordinator. His tenure coincided with variable defensive performance, notably in sacks.
During Sapp's two seasons, Colorado's ability to generate sacks fluctuated. The team ranked 63rd nationally in sacks in 2023, improved to 16th in 2024, but then fell to 129th in 2025. This decline occurred during a challenging 3-9 season. Sapp's departure follows a wave of other coaching staff changes on the defensive side of the ball this offseason.
Several other defensive coaches have also exited the Colorado program recently. Defensive coordinator Robert Livingston left for the NFL, and linebackers coach Chris Marve was promoted. Defensive line coach Domata Peko also departed for an NFL position earlier in the offseason. These exits, including Sapp's, indicate a substantial shift in the team's coaching leadership.
