A walking football group in Gloucestershire has been awarded a £2,500 grant to enhance its services. The Abbeymead Rovers Pirates, supported by Gloucestershire County Council's Grassroots Neighbourhood Fund, will now offer longer one-and-a-half-hour pitch sessions.
This club is dedicated to individuals living with long-term health conditions, including cancer, Parkinson's, and recovery from injury. Participants find the slower-paced version of football accessible and beneficial. The grant aims to expand the group's reach and impact.
Club leader Derek Jones expressed gratitude, highlighting the importance of "fresh air, exercise, fun, and friendships." Councillor Andrew Gravells praised the group's positive effect on health and wellbeing, noting its provision of friendship, confidence, and support beyond physical activity.
