As the Minnesota Vikings prepare for their final preseason game before the September 13th Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, a significant question remains: Harrison Smith's future. The team has granted the veteran safety ample time to decide on playing in the 2026 NFL season.

Journalist Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune believes Smith's protracted decision-making process bodes well for the Vikings. He reasons that if Smith were finished with football, he would have already announced it, given his respect for the organization. Scoggins suggests the absence of a formal announcement or retirement press conference indicates a potential return.

Scoggins noted that while it's possible Smith could decide against playing once the season begins, the longer he delays, the more confidence rises that he will return. This sentiment is echoed by Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman, who stated on August 5th that Smith has earned the right to take the time he needs.

Last season, Smith demonstrated he could still perform at a high level, accumulating 793 defensive snaps and a 68.9 defensive grade. He allowed an 81.0 passer rating when targeted and contributed 42 solo tackles. Cashman acknowledged that the team misses Smith and must prepare to fill his void, but ultimately respects his personal decision.
