In a move that surprised few within the organization, the Atlanta Braves have promoted Walt Weiss to the role of manager, replacing the recently retired Brian Snitker. Weiss, 61, has served as the Braves' bench coach for the past eight seasons, and his promotion comes after a lengthy search that the team's front office kept tightly under wraps.
Weiss, a former All-Star shortstop who played 14 MLB seasons, including his final three with the Braves, brings a wealth of experience to the role. After retiring as a player in 2000, he spent time in an advisory role with the Colorado Rockies before becoming their manager from 2013 to 2016.
The Braves are hoping Weiss can help the team return to the playoffs after missing out this year, following two consecutive injury-plagued seasons. He will be just the fourth manager for the Braves since 1991, following in the footsteps of Hall of Famer Bobby Cox, Fredi González, and the recently retired Snitker, who will be inducted into the Braves' Hall of Fame next year.
