A team of eight seasoned rowers, aged 40 and over, is preparing for an ambitious open-sea challenge: a single-day round trip between the south of Scotland and the Isle of Man. The rowers, members of the Wigtown Bay Coastal Rowing Club, will set off from the Isle of Whithorn in their custom-built boat, Ninian. This 26-mile journey each way presents significant logistical and physical demands.
Previous attempts in March and earlier this month were thwarted by poor weather, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the Scottish climate. Despite these setbacks, the team has trained rigorously in challenging conditions, building endurance and skill. The crew will be divided into two groups of four, with one team handling the outward leg and the other the return journey.
Supporting the rowers will be two yachts and a rigid inflatable boat providing safety and assistance. This flotilla ensures help is available for changing sea conditions or reduced visibility. The team hopes their endeavor will not only raise necessary funds but also encourage others, regardless of age, to pursue the sport.
