Vengsarkar Advises Jaiswal to Temper Aggression After Lord's Failures
17 Jul
Summary
- Jaiswal scored 13 and 0 in the Lord's Test, losing his wicket to Jofra Archer
- Vengsarkar says Jaiswal needs to curb his aggressive instincts to find consistency
- Jadeja's unbeaten 61 not enough to guide India to victory in the Lord's run chase

In the aftermath of India's narrow defeat in the Lord's Test against England, former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has urged young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to curb his aggressive instincts while batting. Jaiswal, who made a sublime start to the series with a century in his first Test innings in England, has since struggled for consistency, scoring just one fifty in five innings.
In the recently concluded Lord's Test, Jaiswal's woes continued as he managed scores of 13 and 0 in the two innings, falling to Jofra Archer on both occasions. Vengsarkar believes Jaiswal's aggressive approach has been his undoing, and the player needs to focus on playing each delivery on its merit to succeed at the international level.
"Jaiswal is a good player with a lot of potential, but he needs to curb his aggressive instincts at times. In Test cricket, you have to play each ball on its merit. A slight mistake and you're out. Since his hundred, he hasn't been among the runs, but consistency is key at the highest level. I expect a lot from him in Test cricket," Vengsarkar said.
Despite the team's defeat, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja put up a valiant effort in the fourth innings, scoring an unbeaten 61 off 181 deliveries. However, Vengsarkar believes Jadeja could have played with more intent at times to put pressure on the English bowlers.
"I believe we should have won the Lord's Test. The team fought hard till the very end, but I feel Jadeja should have taken some risks. Of course, that's something we can only say in hindsight. But if there had been one more partnership, I believe we would have won the game," Vengsarkar added.
The fourth Test between India and England is set to begin on July 23 in Manchester, with the visitors looking to bounce back and level the series.
