Monza's Varela: Serie A's New Scoring Sensation?
23 Oct
Summary
- Gustavo Varela leads Serie A scorers with six league goals.
- Monza acquired Varela for only €2 million, outbidding rivals.
- Napoli and Arsenal are reportedly pursuing the promising striker.
Gustavo Varela has rapidly emerged as a standout player in Serie A since joining Monza. He is currently in contention for the 'capocannoniere' award, having scored six goals in league matches. Varela also contributed one assist and two goals in the Coppa Italia.
Monza secured Varela's signature for a modest €2 million, successfully outmaneuvering clubs such as Venezia, Parma, Hamburger, and Paris FC. Despite his current team's success, there is significant transfer speculation surrounding the player.
Major European clubs, particularly Napoli and Arsenal, are reportedly monitoring Varela's performances. Napoli, unsatisfied with their current striking options, might explore a move during the upcoming winter transfer window.
Benfica, Varela's previous club, reportedly regrets the sale as they did not include a buy-back clause. However, they retain the right to match any future offers from other clubs, a decision that would ultimately rest with the player.
Varela's impact extends beyond just scoring; his involvement in build-up play and agility are notable attributes. He is considered a prospect who could potentially contribute immediately as a substitute at a top club. Any January transfer would likely require a substantial offer for Monza to consider it.
