Virginia Athletics Soars Under Carla Williams' Vision

The University of Virginia's athletic department has experienced a transformative period under the leadership of Athletic Director Carla Williams. Since October 2017, Virginia has celebrated 13 national championship titles in sports including men's basketball, men's lacrosse, men's tennis, and women's swimming and diving. This success extends to conference play, with 14 men's and 15 women's ACC championships.

A significant initiative during Williams' tenure has been the Virginia Athletics Master Plan, launched in September 2018. This plan aimed to modernize facilities and operations, attracting major donations, including millions from board members and former coach Tony Bennett. Recent contributions include a $5 million gift from Scott Wagner and Kristin Norman, and a substantial donation from alum Alex Ohanian specifically for women's athletics.

Academically, UVA student-athletes have excelled, with 734 named All-ACC Academic and 32 earning ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors between 2017 and 2026. The University also reported a 96% graduation rate for students entering between 2015 and 2019, consistent with its highest rates.

Strategic coaching hires and retention have been key. While some notable coaches have departed, Williams' department has demonstrated an ability to attract and maintain elite talent, as seen with women's swim and dive coach Todd DeSorbo. The department has also navigated the evolving landscape of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal, with Virginia football ranking 29th nationally in adjusted portal rankings in 2026 and basketball maintaining exceptional player retention.
