Ream Admits USMNT Must Learn Hard World Cup Lessons

Tim Ream, captain of the USMNT, has reflected on the team's World Cup exit, stating that a crucial lesson remains: the challenge of consistently maintaining performance at a global level. He noted that while the team has improved, they still need further development to match elite international sides.

The USA's tournament concluded in the round of 16, despite a period of genuine momentum. This followed their first World Cup knockout victory in 24 years, a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. This achievement marked the most wins for the program in a single competition.

Ream, who has represented the USMNT for 16 years and earned 86 caps, made these remarks during an event marking the return of the MLS season. His career began in 2010, and he has played for clubs in the US and England, including nine seasons with Fulham, helping them achieve three Premier League promotions.

Reflecting on the team's overall performance, Ream acknowledged the knockout stage loss but pushed back against it defining the entire tournament run. He emphasized the importance of objective analysis, recognizing both successful games and performances that did not yield victory.

Looking ahead, Ream's future with the national team, and potentially his captaincy, is tied to manager Mauricio Pochettino's decision on a contract extension. Pochettino's choice is expected soon and will significantly shape the team's direction. Ream, nearing 39, expressed uncertainty about his prospects for the 2030 World Cup but remains committed to playing as long as he is selected.
