A bullet struck aspiring sports broadcaster Tyler Bright in the neck on January 11, piercing his throat, damaging his esophagus, and lodging in his spine. The incident critically injured his vertebrae and initially left him on a ventilator.
Doctors made vocal cord preservation a top priority during his treatment, recognizing its importance to Bright's planned career in sports broadcasting. This careful approach ensured his voice was protected despite severe injuries.
Bright, a recent UofL graduate, is now in rehabilitation at UofL's Frazier Rehab Center. He has regained approximately 90% of his voice and is working with a dedicated therapy team focused on improving his balance and vocal strength.
He is scheduled to transition to an outpatient recovery center near his home in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on March 10. Despite the bullet remaining in his spine, Bright's resilience and support from his medical team and the sports community fuel his determination.
Recently, Bright received a surprise at a UofL men's basketball game, where he was honored and offered support by ESPN announcer Wes Durham, who encouraged him not to give up on his dream.
