Jake Schaffner, a standout player for UNC baseball, was selected by the Boston Red Sox as the No. 20 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday, July 11. This marks the highest draft selection for a Tar Heel since 2017.
Schaffner, a junior shortstop and transfer from North Dakota State, is projected to earn $4.37 million. His single season at UNC was highly successful; he started nearly every game, excelled as a leadoff hitter, and was a dependable defender.
During his time with the Tar Heels, Schaffner demonstrated impressive stats. He posted a .356 batting average and a 1.019 OPS. He also led the team in runs scored with 85, stolen bases with 26, and triples with eight.
The Red Sox can anticipate a reliable contact hitter in Schaffner. He has the ability to hit the ball to all fields and utilizes his speed effectively on the basepaths. While not a power hitter, he provides stability at the top of the lineup and is a strong defender, capable of playing shortstop or second base.
