Ukraine Veterans Box on Prosthetics in Historic Bout

In a groundbreaking event, two Ukrainian war veterans competed in what is believed to be the world's first professional boxing match contested on prosthetic legs. The bout took place over three rounds in Brovary, near Kyiv.

Artem Khrebet, known by his military call sign Grizzly, and Mykhailo Drobotenko, a former special forces member, stepped into the ring to test their limits and inspire others. Both fighters lost their legs in combat during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Khrebet lost his legs in the Luhansk region, while Drobotenko stepped on a mine. Their preparation was rigorous, adapting to the challenges of boxing without natural knee function and relying heavily on core strength for power and balance.

Scott Welch, a former British heavyweight champion and advocate for adaptive boxing, praised the initiative. He noted that boxing can significantly boost confidence and provide a sense of invincibility for veterans.

During the fight, the crowd evacuated due to an air raid alert before returning to witness the unique contest. Khrebet was declared the winner, claiming the Ukrainian veterans' championship belt. However, Drobotenko was already looking ahead, seeking a rematch to continue their journey.

This event underscores the vast rehabilitation needs facing Ukraine, with estimates suggesting over 100,000 amputations since the 2022 invasion. The fighters emphasized their desire not for pity, but for opportunities to prove that life and personal growth continue even after severe injuries.
