UEFA Threatens FIFA Legal Action Over Failed Deal

European soccer body UEFA is actively considering legal action against FIFA concerning Gianni Infantino's recently withdrawn plan to sell a stake in future World Cup profits. This controversial proposal, which sought to raise $4.2 billion from private investors, was dropped shortly after facing significant backlash. UEFA's lawyers have sent a formal notice to FIFA, highlighting the potential for legal proceedings, arbitration, and regulatory complaints related to the 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' (FFE) plan.

The legal notice specifically identified 18 FIFA executives who must preserve all relevant data and communications, warning that any destruction of evidence could constitute spoliation. The FFE spin-off, valued at $20 billion, was intended to transfer control of FIFA's commercial and tournament operations. However, the project faced widespread opposition, particularly from UEFA, which views it as fundamentally incompatible with proper football governance. FIFA's president, Gianni Infantino, has seen his position significantly challenged following the plan's collapse, with UEFA signaling a desire to end his presidency.
