Triathlete's family awaits justice after French crash

The family of Sam O'Shea, a Commonwealth Games triathlete, is enduring a prolonged period of uncertainty following his fatal cycling accident in France on September 4, 2025. O'Shea, who competed for his native Gibraltar, was struck by a motorbike while cycling downhill near Perpignan. The collision occurred on a blind bend, with the motorbike reportedly traveling on the wrong side of the road.

An inquest confirmed O'Shea died from severe chest and abdominal injuries sustained in the crash. His father expressed the family's deep distress, stating they could wait years for the French investigation to conclude. This ongoing criminal procedure prevents them from achieving closure, as updates are not provided while the investigation remains active.

O'Shea, a 27-year-old bike mechanic and sports marketing graduate, was a respected figure in the triathlon community, having trained with elite athletes. His partner, Lucy Byram, also a professional triathlete, witnessed the tragic event.
