Romo's Return to CBS Uncertain Amid OWI Plea

The broadcasting future of CBS's lead NFL analyst, Tony Romo, remains uncertain following a recent OWI arrest and subsequent plea. Romo, who pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a July 23 incident in Wisconsin, has publicly stated he "own[s] this completely" and acknowledged an over-reliance on pain medication following his playing career.

CBS Sports president David Berson confirmed that Romo is currently on leave. The network has moved J.J. Watt from its No. 2 broadcast team to partner with Jim Nantz for the start of the NFL season. Berson indicated that while planning for the upcoming Super Bowl broadcasts, including CBS's turn in February 2028, is ongoing, a final decision on Romo's return has not been made and the situation is "evolving."

Romo's 10-year, $180 million contract signed in 2020 included a standard morals clause. Despite his legal issues being resolved, CBS is carefully considering the impact on its image and brand. There is also the consideration of J.J. Watt's performance and potential chemistry with Nantz, which could further complicate Romo's comeback.

Romo alluded to a potential return "in time" in his statement, requesting privacy as he focuses on his health, family, and "return to CBS." His health and recovery are also factors being addressed with a team of doctors.
