Crutcher: Packers Champ & TCU Legend

The countdown to TCU football's 2026 season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland, continues. This week, the focus is on former Horned Frog Tommy Joe Crutcher, whose jersey number aligns with the remaining days until kickoff.

Crutcher, who played for TCU from 1961-1963, was a versatile athlete, contributing significantly on offense as a fullback and on defense as a linebacker. He amassed 1,583 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, playing a role in TCU's 1961 upset of No. 1 Texas. His exceptional 1963 season earned him All-Southwest Conference and All-American accolades.

Following his collegiate career, Crutcher was drafted by the Green Bay Packers, where he was instrumental in securing three consecutive NFL titles, including two Super Bowl victories. He later played for the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams before retiring in 1972. His achievements were recognized in 1995 when the Fort Worth Star-Telegram named him to its all-time TCU team as a linebacker.

Crutcher's impressive career also led to his induction into the TCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 2017. Before his collegiate and professional success, he played high school football at McKinney, leading his team to the state semifinals and earning All-State and All-American honors. Crutcher passed away in 2002 at the age of 60.
