Could T.J. Watt Leave Steelers in 2028?
6 May
Summary
- James Harrison doubts T.J. Watt will finish his contract.
- Watt's 2028 contract year has no guaranteed money.
- Steelers could save millions by trading Watt.

Former Steelers player James Harrison has expressed doubt regarding T.J. Watt fulfilling his entire contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harrison highlighted that Watt's contract extension signed last summer includes no guaranteed money for the 2028 season. This financial structure, coupled with Watt turning 34 that year, leads Harrison to believe the team might release him or seek a trade before the 2028 campaign.
Financially, a trade could offer the Steelers significant savings, potentially freeing up $32 million in cap space against $10 million in dead money if processed post-June 1. Despite a recent dip in sacks and pressures from his 2024 season highs, Watt still functions as a primary pass rusher. However, his substantial cap hits of $42 million for the 2026 and 2027 seasons may make a trade difficult, especially if the asking price remains high.
Watt's performance in 2025 saw a decrease to 7.0 sacks and 47 pressures over 14 games, down from 11.5 sacks in 2024. While he may not return to Defensive Player of the Year contention, he is expected to remain an impactful pass rusher for at least a few more years. Releasing Watt next offseason would incur a $42 million dead cap hit for the Steelers, making it financially unviable. Therefore, if a trade does not occur, Watt is projected to remain with the team through at least the 2027 season.
