Texans Lock Up Hunter: $40M Deal Through 2027
6 Mar
Summary
- Danielle Hunter inks $40 million deal keeping him through 2027.
- Texans restructure Stingley Jr.'s contract for cap space.
- Will Anderson Jr. could get historic deal, highest paid player.

The Houston Texans have secured a crucial piece of their defense, agreeing to a one-year, $40 million contract extension for defensive end Danielle Hunter. This deal keeps the five-time Pro Bowler with the team through the 2027 season, highlighting his importance to the team's defensive scheme under DeMeco Ryans. This is Hunter's third contract adjustment since joining the Texans in 2024.
This extension is seen as the initial step in the Texans' offseason plan to retain top defensive players. To facilitate these high-value deals, the team recently restructured cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.'s contract. This maneuver converted over $20 million of his salary into a signing bonus, generating about $16 million in immediate cap relief.
The focus now turns to other key defensive players. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, a Pro Bowl selection in 2025, is in the final year of his contract, with strong mutual interest in a new agreement expected. Additionally, the Texans are reportedly planning a landmark contract for defensive end Will Anderson Jr., the third overall pick in 2023. Anderson's performance, including 12 sacks and 20 tackles for loss last season, has positioned him for a deal that could make him the NFL's highest-paid defensive player.
This proactive approach to securing long-term contracts for core players like Stingley (signed through 2025 for $90 million) and Jalen Pitre ($39 million) is intended to maintain a championship-caliber roster before market inflation increases player values further in the late 2020s.
